Jockey Pump

Vertical Multi-Stage Jockey Pump for Fire System Pressure Maintenance A high-pressure, low-flow vertical multi-stage centrifugal pump assembly engineered to maintain constant static pressure within a fire protection piping network. By automatically compensating for minor pressure drops caused by ambient temperature fluctuations, fitting weeping, or microscopic leaks, this auxiliary unit prevents the high-power main fire pumps (electric or diesel) from cycling unnecessarily, mitigating destructive hydraulic shock and equipment wear.

Precise Pressure Regulation to Protect High-Capacity Fire System Assets

In an integrated fire suppression network, the piping infrastructure feeding sprinklers and hydrants must be kept continuously filled with water under high static pressure. However, real-world piping networks suffer from microscopic pressure losses caused by packing gland weeping, valve seating drops, or thermal expansion and contraction. Without an auxiliary pressure maintenance system, even a tiny drop in pressure would trip the main fire pump's pressure switches, spinning up a massive $100\text{+ HP}$ motor or diesel engine just to move a few cups of water. This creates intense hydraulic shock (water hammer) and strains system components.

The Jockey Pump is the dedicated, high-efficiency solution engineered to handle these minor fluctuations. Typically utilizing a Vertical Multi-Stage (VMS) design, it features a series of stacked inline impellers that allow it to generate exceptionally high discharge pressures while drawing very little power and keeping flow rates low. The jockey pump handles all routine network maintenance tasks, ensuring the main fire pump remains resting, fully protected, and primed for true emergency deployments.

Core System Architecture & Components

An operational jockey pump installation consists of three key components:

1. Vertical Multi-Stage (VMS) Pump Element

  • Space-Saving Inline Footprint: The stacked impeller design fits into a compact vertical footprint, allowing the unit to slide cleanly into crowded mechanical rooms alongside main pump skid arrays.

  • Corrosive-Resistant Internal Components: The impellers, diffusers, and outer chambers are fabricated from high-grade stainless steel to ensure smooth fluid dynamics and resist mineral scaling during long idle periods.

2. High-Efficiency TEFC Electric Motor

  • Continuous Duty Rating: Outfitted with a Totally Enclosed Fan-Cooled (TEFC) industrial motor rated for frequent start-stop cycles without overheating or thermal breakdown.

3. Dedicated Jockey Pump Controller Panel

  • Automated Start/Stop Logic: Unlike main fire controllers—which must be stopped manually once tripped—a jockey pump controller is fully automated. It uses adjustable pressure transducers to cut power once the system returns to its targeted baseline pressure.

Key Performance Features

  • Strict Pressure Curve Calibration: Precision-machined to deliver a higher baseline discharge pressure than the main fire pump, ensuring it can cleanly top off the system. Its flow rate is deliberately capped (typically between $1\text{–}20\text{ GPM}$) so it cannot satisfy an open sprinkler head or block the main pump from starting during a real fire event.

  • Integrated Hydraulic Shock Prevention: Operates at low displacement volumes to safely repressurize the pipe network without triggering destructive water hammer or stressing pipe couplings.

  • Pre-Assembled Check and Isolation Valve Integration: Built with dedicated inline check valves to prevent pressurized backflow from the main fire line, alongside suction/discharge isolation valves for easy maintenance isolation.

  • Sturdy Cast Iron Foundation Base: Reinforced with a heavy-duty cast iron baseplate that anchors securely to mechanical room floors, keeping operation quiet and vibration-free.

Ideal Infrastructure Applications

  • High-Rise Commercial Towers: Maintaining constant head pressure up the vertical riser pipes of tall buildings, balancing minor pressure weeping across multiple floors.

  • Industrial Warehouses and Manufacturing Plants: Supporting miles of horizontal overhead sprinkler piping and underground hydrant loops where minor fitting leaks are common.

  • Retrofit Fire Command Stations: Replacing aging, inefficient horizontal pressure maintenance pumps with high-efficiency vertical multi-stage technology.
